Gareth Southgate gets chance for revenge as England vs Germany is confirmed for last-16 of Euro 2020 in mouthwatering fixture which has given Gazza tears, 1966, World Cup triumph and Frank Lampard ghost goal

England will face Germany in the last-16 of Euro 2020, giving Gareth Southgate a shot at vengeance.

The Germans managed to scrape through Group F with a 2-2 draw against Hungary, despite being behind twice.

With France and Portugal also drawing, Germany finish runners-up and face Group D winners England next Tuesday at Wembley.

It’s almost 25 years to the day since the Three Lions were eliminated by Germany at Euro 1996, also played out at Wembley.

Southgate was the fall guy that day, missing the crucial penalty, and this is the biggest clash imaginable for the England boss…

On a grander scale, the two nations have been fierce footballing rivals at major tournaments for decades.

West Germany were the victims in the final as England won the 1966 World Cup, thanks to a hat-trick from Sir Geoff Hurst, one of which may or may not have crossed the line.

The Germans will feel like they were avenged last time they met England at a major tournament, as Frank Lampard’s strike clearly crossed the line but wasn’t given in the Three Lions 4-1 defeat, also in the round of 16.

In between that, you’ve got Paul Gascoigne’s tears at Italia ’90 and Germany’s extra-victory over England at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico – so it’s fair to say the Germans have enjoyed the better of the rivalry.

But with England topping their group fairly comfortably and Germany ten minutes from elimination at the hands of Hungary, Southgate will entertain very real dreams of revenge next Tuesday at Wembley.
