On a grander scale, the two nations have been fierce footballing rivals at major tournaments for decades.
West Germany were the victims in the final as England won the 1966 World Cup, thanks to a hat-trick from Sir Geoff Hurst, one of which may or may not have crossed the line.
The Germans will feel like they were avenged last time they met England at a major tournament, as Frank Lampard’s strike clearly crossed the line but wasn’t given in the Three Lions 4-1 defeat, also in the round of 16.

In between that, you’ve got Paul Gascoigne’s tears at Italia ’90 and Germany’s extra-victory over England at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico – so it’s fair to say the Germans have enjoyed the better of the rivalry.
But with England topping their group fairly comfortably and Germany ten minutes from elimination at the hands of Hungary, Southgate will entertain very real dreams of revenge next Tuesday at Wembley.
