Germany left it late to rescue their Euro 2020 place as a Leon Goretzka equaliser sent them through to face a last-16 clash with England.
With six minutes to go, the Germans were heading out and Hungary would be facing the Three Lions at Wembley.
Goretzka’s deflected shot broke Hungary hearts to make it 2-2 and send them through to the knockout stages and their opponents home.
It was a dramatic night at the Allianz Arena with the away side stunning their hosts with an unexpected early goal.
A brilliant move from Loic Nego found captain Adam Szalai in the box and he headed home.
Germany piled on the pressure with Mats Hummels’ strong header crashing off the post.
Kai Havertz also had an opportunity, but could not get his shot on target.
Joachim Low’s side enjoyed plenty of possession, but were frustrated by their opponents who led 1-0 at the break.
With the lead changing hands several times in the game between France and Portugal, the Germans knew that a point would be enough to send them through.
They finally got the breakthrough they perhaps deserved in the 66th minute when Havertz bundled in.
Hungary goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi missed a deep free-kick and Hummels headed back across goal. Havertz was on hand in the middle to nod it in.
Incredibly, the away side restored their advantage just seconds after the restart.
Szalai clipped the ball over to Schafer and he was really brave to get his head on it and beat the on-rushing Manuel Neuer.
talkSPORT’s co-commentator Trevor Sinclair said: “I cannot tell you how brave he is there with Neuer coming out ready to punch the ball.
“It’s poor defending from the German’s but you have to applaud his bravery there.”
As time was running out, it looked like Germany would be heading home before Goretzka’s shot found the net to send them through.
Hungary were minutes from an unexpected last-16 place, before their hearts were broken.
