Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels have been recalled to Germany’s squad for Euro 2020 – despite manager Joachim Low telling them they were not be selected for their national team again in March 2019.
Low, who is stepping down as the Die Mannschaft boss after 15 years following the tournament, has named his 26-man squad for the upcoming tournament.
Bayern playmaker Muller, 31, has scored 11 goals and notched 18 assists in helping Bayern win the Bundesliga this season, whilst Borussia Dortmund defender Hummels helped steer his side to the German cup.
On Twitter, Muller wrote ‘back again’, while Hummels wrote he was ‘glad to be back’ and ‘really up for the new chapter’.
The experienced duo will be hoping to help out in Germany’s exciting looking squad as they look to bounce back from their World Cup nightmare.
‘Die Mannschaft’ crashed out at the group stage in Russia in 2018 and simply must do better this summer.
The squad
Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer (Bayern), Bernd Leno (Arsenal), Kevin Trapp (Frankfurt)
Defenders: Emre Can (Dortmund), Matthias Ginter (Mönchengladbach), Robin Gosens (Atalanta), Christian Gunter (Freiburg), Marcel Halstenberg (Leipzig), Mats Hummels (Dortmund), Lukas Klostermann (Leipzig), Robin Koch (Leeds), Antonio Rüdiger (Chelsea), Niklas Sule (Bayern)
Midfielders: Serge Gnabry (Bayern), Leon Goretzka (Bayern), İlkay Gündoğan (Manchester City), Jonas Hofmann (Monchengladbach), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern), Toni Kroos (Real Madrid), Jamal Musiala (Bayern), Florian Neuhaus (Monchengladbach), Leroy Sané (Bayern)
Forwards: Kai Havertz (Chelsea), Thomas Müller (Bayern), Kevin Volland (Monaco), Timo Werner (Chelsea)
The star man: Kai Havertz
Kai Havertz will be heading into the tournament brimming with confidence following his Champions League final winner for Chelsea.
While his first year with the Blues stuttered at times, Havertz has shown glimpses of his top form in England following a £71million move last summer.
Now, he will be looking to kick on this summer ahead of what will be a key campaign for him next term.
The 21-year-old has three goals in 13 caps for Germany and will want to shine on the biggest stage of his career to date.
The one to look out for: Jamal Musiala
Jamal Musiala, Bayern’s 18-year-old attacking midfielder, has also been picked by Low after he snubbed England earlier this year.
Musiala, who was in Chelsea’s academy prior to joining the Bundesliga giants in 2019, opted to represent Germany over England or Nigeria at international level.
The manager: Joachim Low
Low has been in charge of Germany since 2006, having also served as Jurgen Klinsmann’s assistant in the national team set-up for the two years prior to being handed the top job.
He guided Germany to the Euro 2008 final – which they eventually lost to Spain – and to third place at the 2010 World Cup.
Four years later, in Brazil, Germany won their fourth World Cup by defeating Argentina in the final, having thrashed the hosts 7-1 in the semis in that most remarkable of matches.
However, Low oversaw Germany suffer their heaviest competitive defeat when they lost 6-0 to Spain in the Nations League during November 2020, which came after his side crashed out of the World Cup in 2018 at the group stages.
In 2019, he caused controversy by saying that Muller, Hummels and Jerome Boateng would not return to the international scene after the World Cup, but it appears he has decided to wipe the slate clean ahead of this summer.
Speaking to the media following the announcement of his squad, Low said: “You can interrupt an overhaul under the circumstances.”
“In the defence we did not have the desired stability recently. Mats is a player who influences other players and brings experience.”
