Scotland ‘should have won’ against England, says Andy Robertson, who praises game plan of Steve Clarke and suggests Tartan Army out-sung Three Lions fans

Andy Robertson is delighted with the way Scotland executed their game plan during their draw to England but believes they could have had more from the Euro 2020 clash.

The rivals played out a goalless draw in a dull contest at Wembley, leaving Scotland the happier of the two sides.

England had just one shot on target in the entire match, while Scotland, who gave Gareth Southgate’s men a few nervous moments, had two.

Their best chance came midway through the second half as Lyndon Dykes’ effort was cleared off the line by Reece James, although the shot may have been going wide.

And it’s moments like this that will make the Scotland faithful disappointed after the dust settles, believes the capain.

“I believe we should have won the game,” Robertson told talkSPORT. “I believe we could have had more out the game.

“We created the chances and it could have been a lot more but we can’t argue with coming here and keeping a clean sheet against one of the favourites for the tournament on their own turf.

“But once the dust settles down they’ll be a sense of disappointment that we didn’t come away with all three points.

“We started growing in confidence at the back end of the first half. We started causing them some problems and second half we took that as well.

“We had to weather a wee storm the first 5-10 minutes [of the second half] but grew in confidence again and started pushing forward and had a couple of decent chances that we could have taken… you have to be happy with a point here.”

The left-back also paid tribute to the team’s game plan and suggested the travelling 2,600 Tartan Army out-sung the remaining 20,000 England fans.

“We knew we had to avoid defeat to stay in the group,” Robertson added. “We knew we had to try everything we can and our game plan worked.

“We frustrated them, their fans started quietening down and our fans were heard very long!

“We wanted to make them proud, we wanted to make a nation proud and I believe we did that. But like I said, everyone in Scotland may look at that and think we maybe could have won this game.”
