“The Finnish fans are chanting ‘Christian’, and the Denmark fans are shouting ‘Eriksen’ back at them.”
Football united together at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen on Saturday evening, albeit in the most horrendous of circumstances.
The embrace came after Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed suddenly on the pitch near the end of the first half, with CPR administered to the former Tottenham man for an extended period.
Defibrillators were also used as fears about the player’s health grew.
Denmark and Finland players looked on in astonishment at the events unravelling in front of them, with the supporters in attendance in tears.
In a classy gesture, two huge Finland flags were used to give Eriksen the privacy he deserved as he was taken off the pitch.
It’s safe to say we all feared the worst considering the severity of the incident, but images have since emerged of the 29-year-old conscious and awake – much to the relief of the footballing fraternity.
The Danish FA also confirmed that he was ‘awake’ after leaving the stadium.
Both sets of fans remained in their seats during the extended delay in amazing scenes of unity and support for Eriksen.
A video from journalist Michael Wagner showed Finnish fans chanting ‘Christian’, and the Denmark fans shouting ‘Eriksen’ back at them.
Alex Crook, watching the scenes at talkSPORT Towers, said at the time: “Nobody is leaving early, not because they hope the match will continue, but surely because by the time they go back to their cars and start to travel home, they want to hear positive news about Christian Eriksen.”
Crooks added: “I’ve received a message from someone who is medically trained and I’m told a defibrillator gives you an 80 per chance of bringing round someone who is young and fit and healthy.
“And of course Christian Eriksen is all of those. CPR keeps the heart on a shockable rhythm and speed is a key part of the chain of survival.
“That’s something David Connolly has touched on already, the speed the medical staff realised the severity of the situation points towards positive signs.”
Meanwhile, agent Martin Schoots delivered a positive update on Eriksen’s condition when speaking with Dutch radio station NOS Langs de Lijn.
“I don’t know a lot, but I do know the good,” Schoots said. “I just spoke to his father and he says he is breathing and can talk.”
German broadcaster ZDF also said that Eriksen himself requested that Denmark’s squad should continue the game – which finished 1-0 to Finland.
