West Ham assistant manager Stuart Pearce insists the club need to recruit new players this summer – but maybe not the ones you’ve been reading about.
The Hammers overachieved last season, qualifying for the Europa League over the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal, when many expected a relegation battle.
However, Pearce knows the club cannot afford to stand still and must improve the squad this summer.
Manchester United star Jesse Lingard, who was outstanding since arriving on loan in January, is thought to be their main target on a permanent basis.
Meanwhile, Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has been linked with a £40million move to West Ham after falling out of favour at Stamford Bridge under Thomas Tuchel.
But without going into specifics, Pearce laughed off some of the rumours he’s been hearing, insisting the Hammers haven’t even thought about some of them.
“Our recruitment has got to be right this summer,” he told White and Jordan on talkSPORT.
“Some of the names they speculate that I read about are so fanciful, and so not on the radar, you wouldn’t believe it.
“But what I would say is that for David to put his name to a player, he’s got to be sure that that player is the right one to fit into our environment.
“It’s a very work-orientated environment at West Ham, our running stats have gone through the roof since David arrived.
“There’s an expectation that everyone pulls their weight.
“We should be excited by next season, it’ll be tougher.
“All your rivals that have underachieved, their eye is on getting better.
“If you think what you did this year will be good enough to sustain and improve you, you’ll be sadly mistaken.
“You’ve got to improve year on year just to stay level.”
