Southampton interested in Heerenveen midfielder Joey Veerman as Eredivisie club fear transfer

Southampton could make a last-minute move to sign Heerenveen midfielder Joey Veerman, reports claim.

The 21-year-old signed a new four-year contract with the Eredivisie club in July after a fine debut season.

He netted four goals and registered five assists after joining Heerenveen from Dutch second tier side Volendam last year.

And Veerman has started the new Eredivisie campaign in style by scoring twice in three matches.

Dutch outlet Voetbal International say Southampton watched Veerman in action earlier this month and have ‘expressed an interest’ to sign him.

Now, Heerenveen fear a last-minute bid from the Saints could force them to sell their star man ahead of next week’s transfer deadline.

The report adds an unnamed Spanish club are also tracking Veerman’s situation.

Asked if he would be content with his current squad, last week, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “No, I wouldn’t, I know that we will get players in.

“Now comes the moment where I think some good opportunities are coming up, also maybe for us.

“I think the players who were our number one choice, it was not so easy for us to get them.

“But I think there are some other alternatives where we are still keen when they are coming to us, be it on loan or permanent.

“Either way I think we know we need a few, one or two players minimum we must get, maybe three.”
