David Wheeler earned Wycombe their first Championship victory, as they beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 to leave the Owls adrift at the foot of the table.
With manager Gareth Ainsworth watching from hospital after undergoing back surgery, assistant Richard Dobson oversaw a brilliant second-half defensive display to repel the lacklustre visitors and kickstart their maiden second-tier campaign.
After Kadeem Harris’s goal for Wednesday was disallowed for offside, Joey Pelupessy denied Adebayo Akinfenwa a tap-in for the hosts after excellent work from Daryl Horgan. In first-half stoppage time Joe Wildsmith pushed Horgan’s shot wide, and from the resulting corner Wheeler headed home at the near post.
Wednesday dominated possession in the second half but struggled to create clear-cut chances, with Scott Kashket testing Wildsmith on the break. In added time, Callum Patterson was denied by a flying save from Ryan Allsop as Wycombe held on. Garry Monk’s side are now eight points adrift, having started the season with a 12-point deduction.
In the day’s early kick-off, Teemu Pukki netted a first-half double as Norwich climbed to fourth with a deserved 3-1 victory at Bristol City. Pukki struck for the first time after six minutes, timing his run from Marco Stiepermann’s through ball and coolly shooting past Dan Bentley. Eight minutes the Finn got his second, controlling Jacob Sorensen’s pass before firing home.

Jack Hunt pulled a goal back for Bristol City within a minute, but in first-half stoppage time the home defence was breached by Ben Gibson’s long pass, and Emi Buendía produced a brilliant first touch before slotting past Bentley. The hosts were awarded a 73rd-minute penalty when Sorensen brought down Tomas Kalas, but Nahki Wells chipped his spot-kick over the crossbar.
Swansea moved up to second in the table with a 2-0 home win over Blackburn. Steve Cooper’s side were not at their fluent best with captain Matt Grimes left on the bench, but took the lead when Ben Cabango headed home the opener from Connor Roberts’ corner.
Adam Armstrong had chances for the visitors but was denied by Swans keeper Freddie Woodman and Blackburn paid the price just after the hour mark. Roberts released Yan Dhanda down the right and his perfect cross was met by stand-in skipper André Ayew, who registered his sixth goal of the season with a downward header.

Peterborough jumped three places to the top with a 5-1 win over Shrewsbury as the pre-match leaders faltered.
Lincoln and Hull suffered defeats, allowing Posh and Ipswich to move ahead – with Siriki Dembélé's hat-trick ensuring Darren Ferguson's men finished the day ahead on goal difference. Jonson Clarke-Harris scored an early penalty and though that was cancelled out by Joshua Daniels, Dembélé took charge with a goal before half-time and two in the second period after the Shrews had Josh Vela sent off. Jack Taylor rounded off the scoring.
A single goal from Oliver Hawkins was enough for Ipswich to see off Crewe and end the day in second.
Hull led at Swindon through Keane Lewis-Potter's superb solo goal but were pegged back by Paul Caddis and Joel Grant as Town emerged 2-1 winners. Lincoln fell to third after Ben Whiteman's spectacular long-range strike for Doncaster condemned them to a 1-0 defeat.
Charlton leapfrogged Portsmouth into fifth after Jonny Williams and Chuks Aneke scored in a 2-0 win at Fratton Park – meaning Pompey drop out of the play-off places after Sunderland's win over Gillingham. Both Sunderland goals came in the last six minutes, Lynden Gooch adding to Chris Maguire's penalty, after the Gills had Angus MacDonald sent off and Jordan Graham missed a penalty.
Oxford remain bottom after a 2-0 defeat at Fleetwood, who struck in the first minute through Callum Camps, before substitute Paddy Madden killed the game off.
MK Dons and AFC Wimbledon drew 1-1 in Milton Keynes. Joe Pigott gave Wimbledon the lead but Scott Fraser replied. Jerry Yates' double gave Blackpool a 2-1 win at Burton, who split Oxford and Shrewsbury at the bottom with all three on six points. Wigan are just a point better off after a 3-2 defeat at home to Northampton.
Rochdale came from behind to draw 1-1 with Bristol Rovers. And Accrington's game against Plymouth was postponed due to coronavirus cases in the Stanley squad.
Swansea moved above Bournemouth, who were held at home by Derby, and Watford, who lost 1-0 at Barnsley. Alex Mowatt’s sixth-minute screamer was enough to earn a second successive win for new Tykes manager Valérien Ismaël. Watford’s best chance came on the hour, Tom Cleverley firing wide from Ismaïla Sarr’s cross.
Neil Warnock’s Middlesbrough muscled into the play-off places with a deserved 1-0 win at home to Nottingham Forest. Substitute Marvin Johnson broke the deadlock at the Riverside in the 81st minute, converting George Saville’s cross. Forest failed to register a shot on target as they lost for the first time under Chris Hughton.

Interim boss Paul Scholes led Salford to a 2-0 victory over former club Oldham, with James Wilson and Ashley Hunter scoring either side of half-time. Scholes had an ill-fated 31-day spell as Oldham's manager last year and got one over on his old club as Salford extended their unbeaten run to three games.
Early-season pace-setters Newport opened up a five-point lead at the top of the table after leaving it late to beat 10-man Harrogate 2-1. The hosts secured all three points in the 88th minute when Brandon Cooper headed home.
Second-placed Cambridge were unable to keep the pressure on as Crawley came from behind with goals from Max Watters and Tom Nichols to beat them 2-1 despite having Jake Hesketh sent off late on.
Captain Jobi McAnuff was on the scoresheet at Leyton Orient hammered Bolton 4-0, with Danny Johnson, Connor Wilkinson and Craig Clay also finding the net. This all came after visiting goalkeeper Billy Crellin saved a Johnson penalty awarded after just 17 seconds.
Exeter extended their unbeaten run to eight league matches with a 1-0 victory over Carlisle, Tom Parkes scoring the only goal three minutes after the break.
Managerless Mansfield secured a 1-1 draw against Walsall in their first game since the sacking of Graham Coughlan. Barrow were 1-0 winners against 10-man Bradford as Connor Brown scored before Bradford had Levi Sutton sent off before the interval.
Cheltenham held on to secure a 2-1 win over Forest Green thanks to goals from Will Boyle and in-form Andy Williams, while Adam Phillips' second-half penalty was enough to hand Morecambe a 1-0 victory over Tranmere. The result prompted Rovers to sack manager Mike Jackson.
Basement club Southend are still without a league win after Tom Pope's double handed Port Vale a 2-0 victory at Roots Hall. Elsewhere, Stevenage played out a goalless draw with Grimsby.
QPR ended their eight-match winless run with a stunning stoppage-time winner from Dominic Ball. The substitute struck from 25 yards to deny Cardiff, who had rallied from two goals down through two Joe Ralls goals in the second half. Birmingham grabbed a late winner for the second time this week, Gary Gardner striking in the 85th minute to extend Preston’s losing run at home.
Millwall’s strong start to the season unravelled at home to Huddersfield, who went ahead in the 18th minute through Josh Koroma’s deflected strike. With manager Gary Rowett and his backroom team still self-isolating, the hosts could not get back into the game and were sunk by late goals from Pipa and Lewis O’Brien.
Stoke moved level with Millwall on 15 points after James McClean’s first-half lob from Angus Gunn’s goal kick sealed victory over Rotherham. Brentford are also just outside the top six after Ivan Toney’s ninth league goal of the season capped a 3-0 win at Luton.
