Mauricio Pochettino odds-on to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager as former Tottenham boss dubbed ‘perfect’ for job

Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is now odds-on to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager.

The Red Devils coach is under increasing pressure at Old Trafford as United have lost two of their opening three Premier League matches this season, including Sunday’s 6-1 thrashing by Poch’s former club Spurs.

Argentine Pochettino, who left White Hart Lane last November, has been strongly linked with the United job over the past few years – most widely during Solskjaer’s stint as caretaker manager.

However, after a string of impressive results, the Norwegian former Red Devils striker was appointed on a permanent basis in March 2019.

Pochettino has been out of work since his sacking by Tottenham, despite being linked with many clubs including Arsenal, Barcelona and Man City.

And now he is a hot favourite to finally complete a much-expected move to Old Trafford, with Ladbrokes having Pochettino at 4/6 to become the next Manchester United manager.

Spokesperson Alex Apati said: “United are already playing catch-up after just three Premier League games and with Solskjaer second-favourite in the Sack Race betting, it’s now looking increasingly likely Pochettino will soon be replacing him.”

Ex-Manchester United forward and talkSPORT Breakfast host Alan Brazil believes Pochettino would be ‘perfect’ for his former club.

Big Al said: “I thought it was too big a job for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but then they went on a great run and ended the [2019/20] season well [in third place].

“We all suddenly thought United were going to be back up there – ‘it’s going to be a big year next season’ – fair enough for sticking with Ole and he’s producing… but here we go again.

“Pochettino is still available, and you just look at his CV and it’s fantastic.

“If they had to make an appointment and say ‘see ya later’ to Ole, he’d be perfect for Manchester United.

“I’d like to see Ole do well, I really would, but the stats don’t lie and now he’s really up against it.

“Is he buying the players now? If he is, why is he not buying defenders to stop that rot? You can’t keep giving goals away like that, it’s an absolute joke!

“So they’re back to square one as far as I’m concerned.”
