Kyle Walker scored an incredible volley to seal a 1-0 win for Man City at Sheffield United, but took some fans by surprise by deciding not to celebrate.
The England international decided the match in the 28th minute with a fierce arrow into the bottom-left corner as City returned to winning ways in the top-flight.
Considering he marked his 100th City appearance with such an important strike, you would expect a certain level of jubilation.
However, Walker opted not to celebrate out of respect for his boyhood club.
It’s not one of football’s most well-known facts, but Walker was discovered by Sheffield United – and it’s largely thanks to them he went on to achieve everything he has.
Despite only making two senior appearances for the Blades before joining Tottenham, where he spent most of his early career, Sheffield United developed Walker as a kid.
The England international, 30, joined the Blades aged seven and spent eleven years in their academy.
Walker has come a long way since then, and reflecting ahead of his 100th appearance for City, Walker told talkSPORT: “I think I have to thank my mum and dad as genetics come into it, that’s a big thing.
“I work hard and people probably don’t see the amount of work I put in off the field in the gym, but mainly [regarding] nutrition.
“If you’re eating well and resting well then you should be able to perform at the highest level for a good number of years, as a lot of people are doing nowadays.”
Ahead of the Bramall Lane victory, manager Guardiola lavished praise on the former Tottenham full-back for the impact he has made at the Etihad.
“I want to thank the club for bringing him here,” the Spaniard said. “It was an incredible signing for Man City.
“Today top players are the ones who can play every three days. Before you sign a player, you have to look at his ability to play and play and play – the regeneration capability.
“Kyle is an example of that. I have a feeling this is the Kyle we have seen. He is one of our captains. He is so important in the locker room.
“In the last game against Marseille, he had a really good game and hopefully he can against Sheffield United, too.”
Guardiola certainly got his wish.
