Mauricio Pochettino has cast some light on just how meticulous a planner Marcelo Bielsa is.
The Leeds boss was a mentor for Pochettino in the early stages of his career and signed him while he was boss of Argentine side Newell’s Old Boys.
And as a guest on Sky Sports’ coverage of Leeds’ clash against Leicester City on Monday night, the former Tottenham boss has admitted Bielsa’s attention to detail was a step ahead of anyone he had worked with in the game.
“When I played for Bielsa at Newell’s [Old Boys] Reserves, he was ahead of everyone,” Pochettino told Sky Sports.
“Remember there was no internet. But for every game we knew the formation and tactics that our opponents would play because Marcelo bought every newspaper in the country to study the teams.
“You knew the formation, the players, who shoots the penalty.
“All of this information for him is massive.
“Of course it’s not just him who works in this way, All of the coaches today are very well prepared and we have all the capacity to get the information and use the information.
“In the time that he was my coach at Newell’s Old Boys he was perhaps 20 years ahead of everybody.”
Pochettino continues to be linked with the Manchester United job as pressure grows on current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose side are 15th in the table after six games.
And when asked if he is ready to return to management, the Argentine said: “I’m always ready to be involved in the game again.
“I love football, it’s my passion, it’s not my job.
“It’s not stressful when you are working, it’s not stressful to go into the training ground, it’s not stressful to prepare the game, it’s not stressful to compete.”
