Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford has been hailed for the work he is doing off the pitch, as talkSPORT throws its support behind his campaign to end child food poverty.
Rashford has inspired over a million people to sign a petition calling on the government to expand access to free meals in school holidays for struggling families.
Rashford is an ambassador for FareShare, the UK’s leading charity fighting hunger and food waste, and throughout Wednesday talkSPORT visited various depots across the UK to highlight their need for donations.
Ally McCoist, Carlton Cole and Trevor Sinclair were among those to pay tribute to Rashford’s efforts in raising awareness, and hailed the 23-year-old England and Man United ace as an inspiration.
“I’ve got to see Marcus Rashford’s passport, he must be about 76,” said Scottish football legend McCoist.
“He has to be! You can’t have that kind of head on young shoulders like that. It’s just remarkable. He’s absolutely years ahead of where he should be. It’s amazing, it really is.
“I’ve never met the lad, but I’ll tell you right now, even my kids are talking about him and the great work he’s doing.
“Obviously they know him as a footballer and the goals he scores and the great performances he’s had for Manchester United and England.
“But they’re now tuned in to what he’s doing off the pitch. That can only be a good thing because he’s setting an example.
“Not only is he helping out the kids with meals and food, which in this day and age should be a given, but he’s actually having an effect on the kids that are far more well off.
“Thankfully, my kids are in a position where they’re not going to have to worry about their breakfast, lunch or dinner because they’re in a very, very fortunate position. But Marcus Rashford is opening their eyes that not everyone is as fortunate as them.”
Former West Ham striker Cole also hailed Rashford’s selfless work, saying: “All these young footballers that are just taking the right path and doing more than our generation [did], it’s great to see.
“It’s actually getting trendy to do this now and the light’s been shone on it, and rightfully so. I’m just happy to be part of it today.”
Ex-England winger Trevor Sinclair declared Rashford had united the nation as he spoke live from FareShare’s Manchester depot.
“I’m shocked at how mature Marcus Rashford has been,” he said. “He has vigorously and passionately been campaigning for a long time now and raising awareness of this problem we have up and down the country.”
Simon Jordan added: “This is a cause very, very near to his heart which emboldens him and embodies him with a strong sense of understanding. When you get authenticity in anything in life, people can relate to it.
“In a time when the country is very dysfunctional and often very divisive, this highlights a lot about what this island is about, which is when people understand something needs to be dealt with and a cause needs to be supported, it galvanises people.”
