Theo Walcott scores first league goal for Southampton in 15 YEARS as Saints draw at Wolves

Theo Walcott got on the scoresheet once again for Southampton – albeit nearly 15 years after he last netted for the club where he started his career.

It was one of the easiest goals of his life as the unmarked forward tapped in Che Adams’ low cross from the right from six yards out, but Saints could only manage a 1-1 draw at Wolves.

The home side hit back later in the second half as Pedro Neto reacted quickest on the rebound after Raul Jimenez’s shot came back off the post.

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy came to Southampton’s rescue a number of times by denying efforts from Neto, Daniel Podence, Nelson Semedo and Leander Dendoncker.

Walcott could have opened the scoring in the first half but his effort was saved by Rui Patricio, while the England international missed a chance to double Saints’ advantage.

But he made no mistake after the break as Walcott added to his Southampton goal tally for the first time since January 2006 and his first in a league match since scoring the winner in a 1-0 win over Luton in December 2005.

Perhaps he wouldn’t have scored had Wolves not played a back four and had Conor Coady been on the pitch. The Wolves defender missed the clash which ended an ever-present run in the team stretching back to more than two years.

Coady’s absence came despite testing negative for coronavirus after being forced to withdraw from the England squad with the illness, much to the fury of Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Before the match, he told Sky Sports: “He tested negative, he already had the virus, maybe he’s already immune…but he cannot be with us.

“Many things don’t make sense. It’s not a good moment for anybody.”
