Atletico Madrid want versatile Arsenal ace Ainsley Maitland-Niles to cover for suspended Kieran Trippier

Atletico Madrid are considering a loan move for Arsenal outcast Ainsley Maitland-Niles as Diego Simeone looks to find cover for Kieran Trippier following his suspension.

On Wednesday, the Football Association found Trippier guilty of four of seven alleged breaches of its betting regulations.

The England defender was slapped with a worldwide ban and as a result the Atletico are set to be without the 30-year-old for 10 weeks – a total of 13 games.

According to the Daily Mail, the LaLiga pace-setters, who sit top of the table on goal difference, are ready to accelerate their interest in Maitland-Niles as Simeone looks for another full-back to fill in in Trippier’s absence and hold off the threat of Real Madrid.

Maitland-Niles has struggled to break into Mikel Arteta’s XI this season, starting just four Premier League matches this term.

It is believed he is growing frustrated with his lack of playing time and Atletico are ready to take advantage of his uncertain situation in north London.

The versatile midfielder was widely expected to leave the club at the beginning of the window and was said to be on the chopping block as Arsenal looked to raise funds for their top targets.

However, his superb display in the Community Shield against Liverpool seemed to convince the club to keep hold of him.

Barcelona were reportedly interested in the defender, but Mikel Arteta blocked the youngster’s move to the Spanish giants.
