The 35-year-old wrote: “Proud day. Kai signing for @ManUtd. Keep up the hard work son.”
Coleen Rooney also posted on social media, writing: “Special night….. congratulations Kai. I love you and I am so proud of you. Keep trying your best”
Rooney, who is currently interim manager at Derby County after joining the Rams as a player-coach last season, wrote himself into United folklore in a 13-year spell at Old Trafford.
He overtook Bobby Charlton’s goalscoring records for both United and England.
The former Everton striker also holds the record for most Premier League goals scored for one club (183), most away goals (94) and most seasons reaching double figures (12).
During his time at Old Trafford he won everything at domestic level there was to win. This included five Premier League titles, three League Cups, the FA Cup, Champions League, Europa League and Club World Cup.
It’s a long way before Kai can begin to think about achieving that much but Rooney admits he’s a ‘proud dad’.

“Yeah I’m a proud dad. He’s been working hard, he obviously came over to the States with us to continue with his football,” the now interim Derby boss said at a press conference on Friday.
“He went on trial with Manchester United and he’s impressed the coaches. He signed his forms yesterday so I’m delighted for him.”
Rooney revealed Kai had the choice of several clubs but opted for Manchester United.
“He did have other options, other clubs to go to but he decided he wants to sign for Manchester United, so it was his decision and not mine,” he said.
