Lewis Dunk’s deflected header saved Dan Burn’s blushes as struggling Brighton mounted an impressive second-half comeback to secure a hard-earned point in an entertaining 3-3 draw with Wolves on Saturday.
Burn had a night to forget as he was run ragged by Adama Traore at the Amex, becoming the first player to score an own goal and give away a penalty in the same Premier League since Eliaquim Mangala for Manchester City against Hull in September 2014.
Things started well for Graham Potter’s men, with Aaron Connolly putting the hosts ahead with their first attempt at goal after 13 minutes.
Leandro Trossard worked some space on the right flank before his inswinging cross was poked home at the near post by Republic of Ireland international.
Albion’s early lead was swiftly wiped out by Romain Saiss.
The recalled Nelson Semedo crossed from the right, allowing Saiss to loop a header back across goal and into the far corner to make it 1-1 just six minutes later.
Wolves went 2-1 ahead thanks to a fortuitous second goal on 34 minutes.
Pedro Neto’s deflected shot from the right was pushed away by Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, but the ball rebounded back off Burn and trickled over the line for an own goal.
Wolves doubled their advantage just before the break courtesy of a Ruben Neves penalty.
Burn felled Traore in the box and midfielder Neves coolly sent Sanchez the wrong way from the spot to claim his first goal of the season.
The Seagulls got themselves back into halved the deficit within a minute of the restart. Maupay converted from the penalty spot to claim his sixth goal of the season after he was fouled in the box by Joao Moutinho.
Brighton levelled proceedings with 20 minutes remaining thanks to captain Lewis Dunk.
Dunk headed home Trossard’s corner, just minutes after defensive partner Adam Webster had nodded against the crossbar.
Substitute Owen Otasowie blew a golden opportunity to become Wolves’ hero deep into stoppage time as the midfielder headed over from close range when it looked easier to score.
