Gary Neville has jovially suggested Liverpool could be playing Europa League football next season after their 1-0 home defeat to Burnley.
Ashley Barnes’ 83rd-minute penalty saw the Reds suffer a first Premier League home defeat since losing 2-1 to Crystal Palace in April 2017.
The result saw Liverpool’s winless league run stretch to five games as they lost ground on Premier League leaders Manchester United, who are six points ahead of them now.
And Red Devils legend Neville poked fun at the Reds’ predicament at full-time on Twitter.
He wrote: “Football on Thursday Nights ain’t that bad.”
Liverpool have gone 438 minutes without a top-flight goal as Divock Origi, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino missed big chances to score against Burnley.
The Reds had 27 attempts on goal, the most any Premier League team has registered in a single match this season.
Liverpool are fourth in the table and face five of the Premier League’s top seven in their next six games.
Jamie Carragher believes his former club will be ‘fighting for their lives’ to secure a top four spot if their form does not improve quickly.
He told Sky Sports: “For whatever reason this season, it’s massively dropped off in the last four or five games.
“It’s a huge worry going forward, not just in terms of the title, in terms of the top four positions.
“There are so many teams who will fancy their chances this season. At this moment, Liverpool are massively out of form and have got a really tough run of six fixtures to come.
“If they don’t go well, they’ll be completely out of the title race by then, I have no doubt, by the end of February.
“But then between now and the end of the season, if that happens, Liverpool will be fighting for their lives to make sure they’re in the Champions League.”
