Jurgen Klopp ‘picked on the wrong man’ in Duncan Ferguson for touchline spat during Liverpool loss to Everton defeat

“He picked on the wrong man.”

That’s the view of Perry Groves when the topic of Duncan Ferguson’s touchline argument with Jurgen Klopp was discussed on talkSPORT.

In a brief but heated first-half exchange, Klopp is believed to have shouted out ‘Why are you laughing?’ towards a smiling Ferguson as Everton led in Saturday’s Merseyside derby.

The Toffees ended the evening 2-0 winners and securing their first win at the home of their city neighbours since 1999 to heap the misery on the reigning champions and unsurprisingly Klopp wasn’t in the best of moods.

“We are allowed to talk or is it just you, Jurgen?” reportedly came the reply from Ferguson, before journalist Julien Laurens claims Seamus Coleman stepped in and intervened.

The question has to be: Why would you take on this man?

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole felt Ferguson’s cheeky response was a lack of respect towards Klopp’s men. “It was a bit naughty considering what Liverpool have done – especially over the past few seasons,” he explained on The Sunday Session on talkSPORT.

“Remember this is the first time Everton have beaten Liverpool at Anfield since 1999.”

Arsenal favourite Groves issued an emphatic verdict on the spat, though, as he wondered why anyone would involve themselves in an argument with Ferguson.

“He picked on the wrong man. The one person you don’t pick on is big Dunc! Do you know what I mean?

“He chases house breakers and robbers over back gardens for about four miles,” he added in reference to the former Everton striker restraining two burglars attempting to steal from his house in 2001 and 2009.

“You just don’t pick on Big Dunc,” Groves continued.

The result – secured thanks to a Richarlison strike and Gylfi Sigurdsson’s second-half penalty – puts Everton level on points with Liverpool.

After delivering something a generation of Toffees fans hadn’t experienced, the manager’s message was clear and hilarious in equal measure.

“Celebrate tonight with a good glass of wine and passion for Everton,” Carlo Ancelotti told Everton fans in an interview with talkSPORT.

While Ancelotti was relatively restrained in celebrating the win, his players and assistant Ferguson most certainly were not as he was at the heart of the celebrations as he hugged and kissed the players at full-time.

And the celebrations didn’t stop there. There were jubilant scenes in the away dressing room which fans were given a sneak peek into thanks to Niels Nkounkou’s Snapchat story.

“I think the happiest man in our team was Duncan,” Ancelotti said as the blue half basked in the win.

As a player, Ferguson was involved in many Merseyside derby tussles and was quite rightly going to enjoy every moment of this long-awaited victory.
