Man City in driving seat for Lionel Messi transfer, Raphael Varane contract good news for Man United and David Alaba wages could put Chelsea off

Here are the latest transfer rumours and gossip on Tuesday.

Real Madrid may sell Raphael Varane in the summer. The World Cup winning defender’s contract expires in 2022 and Marca say there is worry around the Bernabeu that he may not renew his deal.

Varane, who will be 28 in April, was close to joining Manchester United in 2011 until he had his head turned by compatriot Zinedine Zidane, then working behind the scenes at the club.

David Alaba is a man being chased by Real, as well as Premier League clubs – Chelsea thought to be among them. He will be a free agent in the summer, but The Telegraph report he is seeking £400,000-a-week in wages, which would make him the highest paid player at Stamford Bridge. That is said to be £100k more than N’Golo Kante earns, while Chelsea are also keeping an eye on Dayot Upamecano. Alaba could partner Thiago Silva if the 36-year-old signs a new deal.

Liverpool will find out what they must pay Fulham for Harvey Elliot on Tuesday, as Sky Sports explain.

The Premier League champions signed him as a 16-year-old in 2019 but the two clubs could not agree on a compensation fee and the transfer has had to be referred to a tribunal.

A tribunal is sometimes needed to determine a fee when player who is under 24 has moved between clubs at the end of his contract, and the two sides are unable to agree on compensation. It is thought the Reds offered £750,000 but Fulham want £8m.

Manchester City have not given up on signing Lionel Messi, but ESPN say they are holding off until March or April before making their move.

City’s low profile has proven to be a better path to landing him as opposed to the noise coming from France where PSG are keen. “PSG are making a mistake with the strategy they’re using,” one source told ESPN.

“Leo doesn’t like all that noise in the media and even less the type of comments [which have been made].” Midfielder Marco Verratti is one, who has already admitted he is dreaming of playing with the Argentine and Neymar in the same team.

Harry Kane is worth £150m, but there is good news for Tottenham in that nobody can afford him. That’s according to former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan, who told talkSPORT the top clubs will not pay that kind of money for him.

The Independent report interest from Man United in RB Leipzig’s Ibrahima Konate. While his teammate, Dayot Upamecano, is being watched by a host of European rivals, the 21-year-old Konate is seen as an equally attractive option. However, with Upamecano set to leave, it will be difficult for Leipzig to also sell another centre-back.

Manchester United’s history-making teenager has snubbed the biggest clubs in Europe to sign a professional contract at Old Trafford.

Shola Shoretire only turned 17 last week and has already been starring for the club’s Under-23s, leading to interest from the big boys, but having talked to Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood, has stayed put. He posted on Instagram: “It’s a dream come true to sign my first professional contract for my boyhood club! Such a proud day for me and my family.”

Spanish journalist Josep Pedrerol believes Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland are who Real Madrid want this summer.

“This summer Real Madrid will sign a star, and it will be either Kylian Mbappé or Erling Haaland,” he said. It is said the France and PSG man is the first choice, but if he decides to stay in Paris then Borussia Dortmund striker Haaland is ‘plan B’.

Mbappe, though, has hinted he may stay.

“I’ve always thought that great players were made to play together – and that’s clear between us two,” he told France Football.
