Manchester United have ‘bottled’ Premier League title challenge, says Jamie Carragher – ‘They just seem happy to be involved’

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher claims Manchester United have ‘bottled’ a title challenge in the ongoing Premier League season.

The Red Devils are, after 23 matches, sitting in second place; Man City are five points clear in first, with a game in hand, while Leicester are two points back in third place.

After a fine run of form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United have slowed in recent weeks and claimed only five points from their past four matches.

Their stunning defeat by Sheffield United began a run of just one win in four games, with draws with Arsenal and Everton sandwiching that most stunning of 9-0 wins over Southampton.

United conceded an injury-time equaliser to Everton last time out to draw 3-3 – despite twice leading the Old Trafford clash – and after the game Solskjaer claimed his side are NOT in the title race despite sitting second in the top-flight table.

“We’re not talking about winning titles,” said Solskjaer. “We shouldn’t even be considered as title-chasers. That’s one for [the media].”

Carragher could not believe what Solskjaer was saying, and claimed United have not willingly removed themselves from the title race – they have, in fact, ‘bottled’ their challenge.

“I think Man United have bottled it now they’ve got there, they’ve almost talked themselves out of it,” said Carragher on Sky Sports.

“I think it’s only Liverpool who can stop [Man City] – I don’t think Man United fancy it.

“Listening to the comments of the Manchester United manager… Man United just seem happy to be involved – I cannot believe it.”

Carragher was speaking ahead of Man City’s 4-1 win at Anfield which moved them ten points clear of Liverpool with a game in hand.

Many believe the Reds may now struggle to finish in the top four rather than seriously challenge City for silverware, and Carragher admitted this is one of the strangest Premier League seasons ever.

“It’s a unique season,” continued the Anfield icon. “Liverpool have no centre-backs, City have had no strikers and De Bruyne has been out. We were saying last season that City were off the boil; they’re only three points better off so it shows they’re still not the City of two, three years ago.”
