Tottenham star Harry Kane returns and fires Jose Mourinho’s men to win over West Brom and reaches another huge goal milestone

Tottenham Hotspur superstar Harry Kane returned from injury and fired his side to a 2-0 win over West Brom and became the club’s joint-second highest goalscorer in history.

The England captain’s 13th league goal of the season was his 208th in total for Spurs, putting him level with legendary striker Bobby Smith.

He is still behind England and Lilywhites hero Jimmy Greaves who hit the back of the net 266 times in 379 appearances.

That record could be under threat though, especially if Kane stays in north London and remains free of any long-term injuries.

It was quite the comeback for Kane, out injured for just over a week after hurting both ankles in a defeat to Liverpool.

But his strike, and a goal from Heung-Min Son, was all Jose Mourinho’s side needed to down Sam Allardyce’s struggling Baggies.

Spurs dominated from the off in N17 and, unlike in their dire defeat to Chelsea, looked to create in the final third.

Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela were both lively after coming into the starting XI, but it was Kane who, understandably, looked the most dangerous.

A Son shot after 10 minutes sparked Spurs into life but they would need to be in far better form to beat Sam Johnstone, who has been a huge highlight for the Baggies this season.

One Kane strike went a whisker wide, another was parried wide by the shot-stopper, but the glovesman’s best moment came minutes before the break.

Tottenham right-back Serge Aurier was sneaking around in the six-yard box and he attempted to nod a header beyond Johnstone but he clawed the chance away before more Baggies defenders blocked a follow up effort from Toby Alderweireld.

West Brom’s plot was strike on the counter and they nearly did so just before half-time.

New signings Mbaye Diagne and Robert Snodgrass combined but the former’s header was stopped on the goal-line by an alert Hugo Lloris.

It was inevitable there would be a goal in the second half and inevitable who would be the goalscorer.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was given time to survey his options not far from the edge of the area and having seen Kane sneak along the defensive line, he calmly slipped in the England captain.

Beyond the Baggies defence he kept his composure against the looming Johnstone and his curled low strike found the far corner.

One became two not long after and this time Kane was nowhere to be seen.

On the counter, Moura hurtled down the pitch and within shooting distance he opted to check inside to a central position and slotted a cute pass to teammate Son and the South Korean rifled the ball home via a deflection.

Diagne would have a goal disallowed for offside quickly after, showing there was still some life in West Brom.

Diagne would have a second strike chalked off, again for offside, as Spurs took their foot off the pedal.

A calf injury to Aurier will be a concern for manager Mourinho, especially with a hectic schedule up ahead, including an FA Cup clash with Everton on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, another no-show for Gareth Bale is certain to make some headlines too, along with debutant Dane Scarlett, who became Spurs’ youngest ever Premier League debutant.
