Willian and ‘anonymous’ Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ‘made no impact at all’ in Arsenal’s defeat to Aston Villa

Tony Cascarino has slammed the lack of impact from Willian and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa.

Ollie Watkins’ second-minute goal was enough to condemn the Gunners to a 10th Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday.

Willian and Arsenal captain Aubameyang were brought on as substitutes in the second-half, but failed to leave their mark.

Cascarino told talkSPORT: “Arsenal got frustrated.

“The biggest disappointment for Arsenal is when you see two players that come on, who have been quality… Willian was poor, he kept giving away the ball and Aubameyang.

“These are two top quality players who have done a hell of a lot in football that came on and made no impact at all.

“Aubameyang, I didn’t even know he’d really come on.

“He’s been far too anonymous this year as a player because he is a player that Mikel Arteta can’t afford for him not to change games and make things happen.”

Willian is yet to score for Arsenal in 23 appearances since joining on a free transfer from Chelsea last summer, while Aubameyang has managed to find the net eight times this season.

Arsenal are six points off a European spot and when asked how big a setback the Villa defeat is, Gunners boss Arteta replied: “A big blow.

“Because considering the performances we put into both games, we got zero points out of that.

“And the sadness is we just give the opponent the game. But we have to come back. We’ve done it this season and we have to do it again.”
