Newcastle were handed a huge boost in their Premier League survival bid as an inspired second-half display by Allan Saint-Maximin helped them to a 2-1 win at Burnley.
The Frenchman scored and provided an assist for in the space of five minutes after Matej Vydra gave the hosts the lead.
It appeared to be one of those afternoons for Steve Bruce’s side as they were denied a penalty in the first half despite James Tarkowski’s high boot on Sean Longstaff, while Bailey Peackock-Farrell denied Dwight Gayle from point-blank range.
But Bruce’s decision to bring on Saint-Maximin on 57 minutes, as well as striker Callum Wilson proved to be inspired as the match was turned on its head seven minutes later.
Saint-Maximin teed up Jacob Murphy, who fired into the corner of the net just short of the hour before a great solo run and left-footed finish by the Frenchman gave Newcastle the lead.
The result sees the Magpies go six points clear of 18th-placed Fulham, who were beaten by Wolves on Friday night.
