Arsenal reportedly SACK under-23s coach Steve Bould after association of over 30 years with the club, academy manager Per Mertesacker tasked with finding replacement

Arsenal have sacked under-23s coach Steve Bould, it has been reported.

Bould, who played for the Gunners for eleven years, took up a coaching role at their academy a year after retiring in 2000.

He led their under-18 side to successive Premier Academy League titles in 2009 and 2010 as well as the FA Youth Cup in the 2008-09 season.

He was then promoted to become assistant to Arsene Wenger in 2012 and stayed in the role for seven years.

Bould was then put in charge of their under-23 side in June 2019, swapping jobs with Freddie Ljungberg as part of a major restructuring of Arsenal’s coaching staff.

But now his association with the club, which has lasted over 30 years, is over, the Athletic says.

It’s been a difficult season for Arsenal Under-23s, who finished tenth in Premier League 2.

However, the report adds that results aren’t the main reason for Bould’s departure.

With the likes of Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe growing influences on the first-team, there’s huge pressure to continue the production line.

And the Athletic suggested the parting of ways is due to the friction between the old and new methodology and the changes in approach to scouting at the club.

It’s not clear who will step in for Bould but academy manager Per Mertesacker will be tasked with finding a replacement.
