Everton missed the chance to leapfrog Liverpool into sixth place as they lost 2-1 at home to Aston Villa on Saturday.
Ollie Watkins put the visitors ahead in the 13th minute, before Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his 20th goal of the season just six minutes later.
Villa wasted a handful of chances to retake the lead as the game looked to be petering out for a draw.
However, Anwar El Ghazi curled home a superb 20-yard effort in the 80th minute.
The result leaves Everton in eighth place, while Aston Villa climb to ninth.
Villa raced into an early lead when Watkins dispossessed Mason Holgate to bear down on goal and direct the ball past Jordan Pickford.
Dean Smith’s side’s lead did not last long, though, as Calvert-Lewin headed in Lucas Digne’s corner.
Villa would have been scratching their heads over how they were not in front during an eight-minute blitz on Pickford’s goal.
The England goalkeeper somehow saved a close-range Watkins volley, before El Ghazi smashed the rebound on to the crossbar in the 29th minute.
Shortly after, Villa were undone by the woodwork for a second time when former Everton midfielder Ross Barkley’s long-range shot hit the post.
Watkins was then played in on goal, but had his effort deflected wide for a corner.
During a much quieter second-half, both sides failed to create meaningful openings, before El Ghazi’s moment of magic.
The Dutchman received a pass from Bertrand Traore and cut in on his right foot to fire an unstoppable strike into the back of the net for the three points.
