FA Cup hurt inspired humble Chelsea Champions League hero Mason Mount and now he’s targeting a Premier League title next season

Chelsea star Mason Mount admitted his FA Cup final hurt inspired Champions League glory in Portugal.

The England midfielder was impressive again as the Blues beat Man City 1-0 in the final.

Mount is a Champions League winner, aged 22

He laid on the assist for the only goal of the game with his superbly executed through ball for Kai Havertz allowing the German to round Ederson and tap home.

Mount’s breathless running and tactical nous helped the Blues stifle a Pep Guardiola side which barely created a clear cut chance all game.

And his attitude on a glorious night was partly down to the two FA Cup final losses he’s now been a part of.

Losing to Arsenal last season and Leicester City just weeks ago clearly frustrated him and Mount was keen to ensure he didn’t suffer more hurt in this final.

He told BT Sport: “I’ve played in two finals for Chels and we’ve lost them both – FA Cups. The way that hurt after the game.

“I’ve dreamt as a kid, coming all the way, making a final and winning the trophy, that’s what I’m all about. That’s what this club is all about. I know it in and out.

“I’ve been there as a kid and now to go all the way in a Champions League, throughout we had tough, tough games. We played some top teams. And now we’re in a final and we’ve won.

“I can’t put it into words. It’s such a special occasion. At this moment in time we’re the best team in the world. You can’t take that away from us.”

Mount is quickly earning a reputation not only as one of England’s finest young talents but as a honourable and humble star.

He was quick to point out it isn’t just the 11 on the field who deserve credit after a triumph.

“It’s not just the players, we’ve got loads of staff here that have come through,” he added.

“I had my dad in the stands. I burst into tears seeing him. It’s a long, long journey to get to this moment here. To my family, I thank them for everything.

“They have given me everything and now these [medals] are the rewards.”

And continuing his selfless attitude he revealed he consoled City players after final whistle and made sure he acknowledged their accomplishments.

Mount said: “They have given it everything just like us so my celebrations after the game were cut short because I went over to them because I know what they have given.

“I just went to them and said they deserved to be here because of what they have done this year. They have one of, if not the, best team in the world, definitely in the Premier League.

But ominously for City, especially given they have now lost all three times they have faced Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel, Mount is targeting an English title.

“It’s tough for them but hopefully next season we’ll be pushing for the Premier League as well,” he added.
