Thomas Tuchel ‘will go down in Chelsea folklore’ as he meets Roman Abramovich for first time after Champions League success and expects new contract

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel will go down in club folklore for leading the side to Champions League.

That’s the view of Blues legend Joe Cole, who watched on in Porto as Kai Havertz’s goal saw them beat Manchester City to the trophy.

German boss Tuchel arrived in west London back in January with Chelsea struggling for a top four finish and looking unlikely to make any waves in the knockout stages of the European Cup.

He replaced club legend Frank Lampard in the Stamford Bridge hotseat and he’s turned them into European champions in just 124 days.

A stunning tactical performance on the biggest stage saw his 5-2-3 stifle Pep Guardiola’s side and one magical moment from Havertz won them the trophy.

And Cole recognises he will now go down in history for the astonishing achievement.

“We thought he was one of the brightest young managers in world football and now he has proved it and he’s going to go down in the folklore of this club alongside some great names, some great managers.

Mourinho, Ancelotti, Di Matteo won the Champions League, he’s a club favourite.”

Man City and Pep Guardiola are already sick of the sight of Tuchel.

“He’s come into this country, he’s played Pep Guardiola three times and won all three games,” chimed in Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand.

“Today Tuchel, the way he set his team up, really nullified any threat Man City had,” he added.

The German became just the third manager in history to beat the Spaniard three times in a season.

Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool, 2017-18) and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Manchester United, 2019-20) were the only others to complete the feat.

Tuchel is now targeting a new contract, having met Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich in person for the first time on the Estadio do Dragao pitch after one of the club’s greatest ever triumphs.

The 47-year-old signed an 18-month contract in January – and will “demand” to be a part of driving Chelsea onwards.

Asked whether he will be able to wrap up a new deal, Tuchel replied: “I’m not even 100 per cent sure, but maybe I have a new contract now.

“So let’s check this first. I spoke to the owner right now on the pitch, this was the best moment for a first meeting.

“Or the worst, because from now on it can only get worse!

“We will speak tomorrow, speak later, speak tomorrow, and looking forward to this.

“I can assure him that I will stay hungry, that I want the next title and I feel absolutely happy, as a part of a really ambitious club, a strong part of a strong group. That suits my belief and my passion about football in the moment perfectly.

“So my desire is to go for more victories, to grow as a coach and to push the group on the first day of the next season to the limit.

“We have work to do to close the gap, and this is what I’m all about. And so it will be nice to meet him a bit closer.

“We are in contact but not personal, he knows what’s going on from me directly. But now it’s nice to meet him.”
