Mauricio Pochettino ‘will not go back to Tottenham’ if they sell Harry Kane with Argentine having unfinished business at Paris Saint-Germain

There is no chance Mauricio Pochettino will go back to Tottenham this summer if they are planning to sell Harry Kane, according to Andros Townsend.

The rumour mill has been sent into overdrive over the last few days amid claims that Spurs want to bring Pochettino back to the club just 18 months after they sacked him.

The Argentine was axed by Spurs in November 2019 after a poor run of results had left them 14th in the Premier League.

It was viewed by some as hasty at the time as he’d led them to the Champions League final just a few months earlier.

Jose Mourinho was swiftly hired, but that was not a marriage that lasted long as he was gone by April this year.

Pochettino was only hired by Paris Saint-Germain in January, where he has won two trophies and manages the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

But there are rumours he is not entirely happy at the club after failing to win the Ligue 1 title.

Chairman Daniel Levy is believed to want him back and has reportedly admitted to friends he made a mistake.

While their manager search goes on, there is doubt about the future of their star man – Harry Kane.

The striker wants out of the club as he pursues trophies, something Spurs have been unable to achieve during his time in north London.

Former Tottenham midfielder Townsend believes Pochettino back to the club is a no-go if they sell Kane.

“I don’t think there’s any chance in this world Pochettino goes back to Spurs without Harry Kane. It’s impossible,” Townsend told talkSPORT Drive.

“In today’s market, what are you going to get for £150million?

“If we were having this conversation in a year’s time, I would believe it. I felt the way Pochettino left, it was kind of on good terms.

“Daniel Levy and he both kind of said they will go their separate ways and will see what happens in the future.

“I think it may be a year too soon. Pochettino hasn’t done what he wanted to do at PSG.

“Spurs have gone a different route and it’s failed.”

Townsend also can’t see Pochettino wanting to go back to the club because the same problems exist now that they did when he left.

He added: “Pochettino left because he asked for a rebuild that wasn’t given to him. Pochettino knew they were going to be 14th. He said after the Champions League final ‘we need a rebuild. This club, this team has come to the end of the line. I need a rebuild’.

“I think he told six or seven players he wanted them to go. When you do that and on July 1 they are still there, it’s never going to work out. You’ve got players who know the manager doesn’t want them there.”
