Tottenham finish above Arsenal for fifth straight Premier League season as Spurs qualify for Europa Conference League and help Chelsea into Champions League

The 2020/21 season has not been a happy one for either north London clubs.

Arsenal and Tottenham have been scrapping near the middle of the table with no silverware forthcoming for either side.

The one thing they were playing for heading into the final game of the season was bragging rights.

Just one point separated them before the game, with Spurs holding the advantage.

Some late drama on the final day saw Ryan Mason’s side manage to hold on to seventh place, and qualify for the Europa Conference League..

The Gunners kept up their brilliant record of winning the final game, having done so over the last 10 campaigns.

Mikel Arteta’s side beat Brighton 2-0 with the goals coming from Nicolas Pepe and did all they could to leapfrog their rivals.

Tottenham, meanwhile, were behind against Leicester as Jamie Vardy scored a brace from the penalty spot.

But then a Kasper Schmeichel own goal and two late Gareth Bale efforts saw them win 4-2 and take seventh.

The Spurs win also inadvertently helped rivals Chelsea qualify for the Champions League.

Finishing above their rivals was one crumb of comfort for the Spurs fans amid a troubling time.

Two years ago, Mauricio Pochettino led Spurs to the Champions League final, but not much has gone right since then.

His successor, Jose Mourinho, was axed last month just days before they played in the Carabao Cup final, which they went on to lose.

They are managerless and now their star man, Harry Kane, wants to leave the club.

They face another season without Champions League football.

Things are not much better over in the red half of north London with Mikel Arteta struggling to get the team going this season.

Star man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has not delivered like he previously has, despite penning a new long-term deal.

Now the two clubs have been reduced to bickering about which is the ‘bigger club’.

Ex-Spurs man Jamie O’Hara clashed with an Arsenal fan live on talkSPORT as they debated that point.

O’Hara said: “Arsenal haven’t been a big club for eight years. When was the last time you got Champions League football?”
