Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta shared a touching moment with the club’s owner Roman Abramovich after leading the side to their second Champions League win on Saturday.
The Blues conquered Manchester City, beating them 1-0 in Porto thanks to Kai Havertz’s decisive first-half strike.
For a lot of the faces in the Chelsea team, this has all happened very quickly.
Many of the starting XI are now relatively recent signings or young academy graduates.
However, for club captain Azpilicueta this has been a long journey which started after Chelsea’s first win in 2012.
The Spaniard was signed in the summer following this triumph and has worked for nine years to replicate the glory.
On Saturday night, he finally achieved this goal.
Azpilicueta shared an emotional conversation with owner Abramovich after the full-time whistle.
The defender said: “I don’t know where the trophy is, but I will bring it to you because it’s yours.”
They then embraced and the Russian stuck around to shake hands with the entire squad.
Azpilicueta delivered on his promise, bringing the cup back to Abramovich so they could take pictures with it together.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel met Abramovich for the first time on Saturday night – an exceptional first impression.
The German boss arrived in west London back in January with Chelsea struggling for a top four finish and looking unlikely to make any waves in the knockout stages of the European Cup.
He replaced club legend Frank Lampard in the Stamford Bridge hotseat and he’s turned them into European champions in just 124 days.
