When Man United vs Liverpool could be replayed with May 16 a possible date as Red Devils unlikely to be hit with points deduction for Premier League postponement

Manchester United’s game against Liverpool was called off on Sunday as protests at Old Trafford and outside the team hotel against the Glazers turned ugly.

A win for Liverpool would have clinched the title for Manchester City and its postponement causes a real headache for the Premier League.

With just three three weeks left of the league season and Manchester United still in Europa League contention, there are not many dates for this game to be played.

United play on Thursday against Roma in the second leg of their Euro semi-final, having won the first leg 6-2, and return to league action against Aston Villa on Sunday.

They have five games scheduled in from May 6 through to the 23rd with the Europa League final – barring a spectacular collapse in Rome – to follow three days after the Premier League ends.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are back in league action this Saturday and have four games left, as well as the United meeting.

Both clubs will play twice in the final week of the season after the Premier League moved the penultimate round of fixtures back to enable fans to return to stadiums once lockdown rules are eased on May 17.

Man United and Liverpool's remaining fixtures

Thursday, May 6 – Roma vs Man United

Saturday, May 8 – Liverpool vs Southampton

Sunday, May 9 – Aston Villa vs Man United

Wednesday, May 12 – Man United vs Leicester

Sunday, May 16 – West Brom vs Liverpool

Wednesday, May 19 – Man United vs Fulham, Burnley vs Liverpool

Sunday, May 23 – Wolves vs Man United, Liverpool vs Crystal Palace

Moving Liverpool’s trip to West Brom from Sunday, May 16 to an earlier midweek slot could open up that date for the Old Trafford clash to be staged.

But the Premier League are still deliberating and holding discussions with safety advisory groups as well as both clubs.

One possibility is the Premier League season is extended for a further week to May 29-30 to enable Man United vs Liverpool to be played.

But that would not be welcomed by players or national teams, with England among those in friendly action on June 2 to kick off their preparations for Euro 2020.

The Premier League and Football Association are investigating the scenes at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Two police officers were left injured as things turned nasty outside the stadium, while a few hundred fans broke into the stadium and were on the pitch, with some letting off flares and causing damage.

A points deduction has been mooted as a possible sanction against United but it is understood that is highly unlikely.

The club could, however, be hit with a fine if they are found to have not done enough to prevent the security breaches.
