Dejan Lovren concedes penalty during Croatia’s draw to Czech Republic but talkSPORT told there was ‘no intent’ from ex-Liverpool defender

Croatia recovered from a penalty decision that left their players incensed as they battled to a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic at Hampden Park.

The Czech’s man of the moment, Patrik Schick, was left bloody-nosed by Dejan Lovren with replays showing the ex-Liverpool man caught him in the face with an elbow.

But in a surprise twist, referee Carlos del Cerro Grande pointed to the penalty spot after being told to look at the incident again by VAR. Schick stepped up and scored the spot-kick to put the Czech Republic 1-0 up at half time.

The consensus is that Croatia and Lovren were hard done by. talkSPORT’s Chris Iwelumo said on commentary: “I’m very surprised.

“He goes up and his arm is up in a natural position. There is contact but there’s no intent there.”

Meanwhile, Alex Crook added: “You will see that at an awful lot of set pieces. If you start giving penalties for that then there will be an awful lot of spot kicks.”

Zlatko Dalic’s men unsurprisingly had their backs up but were level two minutes into the second half thanks to an excellent Ivan Perisic strike.

It was a good response by Croatia but they could have been level before the break, however, Ante Rebic was rash when put through on goal.

After Perisic’s goal, Croatia looked the more likely to win but Nikola Vlasic fired wide on 72 minutes, while Bruno Petkovic’s deflected effort trickles just wide.

The result gives England a chance to go top of Group D if they beat Scotland at Wembley tonight. A win for Scotland could take them as high as second, however.
