Diogo Jota’s exceptional start to life at Liverpool continued on Tuesday evening as he netted a brilliant hat-trick in the Reds’ 5-0 drubbing of Atalanta.
The Portugal forward has now scored SIX goals in just ten days for his new club, who made it three Champions League wins out of three to put themselves in a commanding position in Group D.
Jota has now made it seven goals in just five starts for Liverpool, and there are growing calls for him to replace Roberto Firmino in Jurgen Klopp’s XI.
Firmino has built up a reputation as more of a playmaker for Liverpool’s prolific wide-men Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in recent years.
However, his ability to get goals and assists himself has dwindled in recent times.
If stats are anything to go by, however, Jota should be permanently drafted into Liverpool’s XI by Klopp without second question.
The Anfield new boy has now overtaken Firmino’s tally of five goals since the start of 2020, with his Brazilian teammate scoring just once this season.
And working for talkSPORT during our live commentary of the Champions League encounter, England icon Stuart Pearce even said Jota has already done enough to be called the best purchase any club made during the summer transfer window!
“A classic finish,” Pearce said of Jota’s opener. “He’s becoming, I wouldn’t say the find of the season, but certainly the signing of the season at these early stages.
“Credit to Jota, he stayed on his feet and dispatched the ball into the back of the net in some style.
“He is some player.
“He is an intelligent footballer, and playing with the level of footballer he is playing with at Liverpool is only going to take him onto that next level.
“If you look to one side and you’ve got [Sadio] Mane, and to the other you’ve got [Mohamed] Salah, that are drawing defenders and pulling them all over the place, you’ve got every chance.”
