Jurgen Klopp given yellow card following protests at referee when Liverpool were 5-0 up in Champions League clash

Liverpool’s win at Atalanta was about as about as perfect a performance as you can possibly hope for on a Champions League away night.

The six-time winners are in a great position to breeze through to the round of 16 as they blitzed the Serie A side by winning 5-0 in Bergamo.

It was a stunning attacking display by the Reds, with Diogo Jota in particularly impressive form as he netted a hat-trick.

Jota scored the first two to give Liverpool a commanding 2-0 lead at half time before quickfire goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane early in the second half put the match beyond any doubt.

The Portuguese forward put the icing on the cake five minutes after Mane’s dinked effort to complete his treble.

The contest was all over less than ten minutes into the second half – but Klopp still managed to let his frustration get the better of him.

In fact, Klopp’s anger even got too much for the officials at one point with referee Ovidiu Hategan showing him a yellow card in the 73rd minute.

Managers being shown cards is a relatively new feature in the game, but why was the Liverpool boss cautioned?

There were shouts for Liverpool to get a penalty as Curtis Jones was shoulder barged onto the floor, but it wasn’t given by the referee or VAR.

Klopp certainly let the fourth official know that he didn’t agree and Hategan went over to the German to inform him that the incident had already been reviewed.

Klopp could then be heard saying: “I asked the question and he [the fourth official] didn’t know.”

But despite that lapse in communication, Klopp was booked for his protests which were deemed too excessive.

Just imagine what he would have been like if Liverpool were losing the match!
