Jordan Pickford couldn’t hide his frustration as Callum Wilson’s second-half penalty set Newcastle on their way to a battling 2-1 victory against Everton on Sunday afternoon.
The England goalkeeper was rested for the St James’ Park showdown as second-choice stopper Robin Olsen impressed on his debut for the Toffees.
But the Sweden goalkeeper was unable to deny Wilson from the penalty spot, who later added a second, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury-time goal was not enough to prevent Carlo Ancelotti from suffering back-to-back defeats for the first time as Everton boss.
Ancelotti made five changes to the side which lost at Southampton, as Ben Godfrey, Alex Iwobi, James Rodriguez and the suspended Lucas Digne also made way for Jonjoe Kenny, Niels Nkounkou, Andre Gomes and Fabian Delph.
Newcastle head coach Steve Bruce made just one change to the side which drew 1-1 at Wolves last weekend, with Sean Longstaff coming in for Ryan Fraser in midfield.
Newcastle enjoyed plenty of early possession, but with the visitors pressing high, not in areas in which they could make an impact on the game, while Everton were unable to stretch a well-marshalled home defence with width at a premium.
The hosts should have taken a one-goal lead into the break as Saint-Maximin fluffed an inviting opening in front of goal following a precise through ball from Wilson.
Within 11 minutes of the restart the hosts took a deserved lead, with Wilson scoring from the spot after Andre Gomes’ clumsy foul on the former Bournemouth frontman.
Wilson doubled Newcastle’s advantage after brilliant link up play with another ex-Cherries star Fraser saw the striker net at the far post after an inviting cross from the Scotland international.
Calvert-Lewin’s stoppage-time striker – his 12th of the campaign already – made for a tense conclusion as Karl Darlow was also forced to tip Bernardo’s looping effort over.
But Bruce’s men stood firm to secure a welcome three points and move into the top half, while Ancelotti’s men remain second behind arch nemisis Liverpool after another disappointing display.
