Olivier Giroud should be Chelsea’s main striker amid Timo Werner goal drought, says former Blues star Mario Melchiot

Olivier Giroud should be Chelsea’s starting striker, according to Mario Melchiot.

The £45million summer arrival of Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham’s form pushed the 34-year-old down the pecking order in the early stages of the season.

However, Giroud has scored seven goals in as many games to force his way back into Frank Lampard’s side.

His latest goal came in Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Tuesday as Werner’s scoreless run stretched to eight matches.

Melchiot, who played 165 appearances for Chelsea between 1999 and 2004, believes Lampard has an easy decision to make when it comes to who his main striker is.

He told Wednesday’s talkSPORT Breakfast: “How do you take a scoring striker out of the team?

“Giroud has scored then he scores another goal, now he scores again. The guy is in hot form.

“When a striker is in hot form, the coach doesn’t even think because he is thinking for the coach.

“He is telling him, ‘Frank, I am the scoring guy for your team, put me in’. Frank isn’t going to think, ‘no, I can’t put him in’.

“He has to put him in because he scores the goals. Yesterday he scored again. He needs to lead the line at this point.”
