Cristiano Ronaldo’s homecoming to Portugal did not go to plan as Juventus fell to a 2-1 defeat to Porto in the Champions League.
The 36-year-old returned to his homeland for the first time at club level as a Juventus player and was fuming when he was not awarded a late penalty.
Ronaldo went down under a challenge from Alex Sandro in the fourth minute of injury-time, but referee Carlos del Cerro Grande played on, much to the disbelief of most Juventus players.
Juventus’ Champions League last-16 first leg clash got off to the worst possible start as Rodrigo Bentancur gifted Porto the lead with a shocking back pass after just 61 seconds.
Bentancur sold Wojciech Szczesny short, which led to Mehdi Taremi sliding in to put Porto in front.
And Andrea Pirlo’s side got off to another poor start at the beginning of the second-half as they were 2-0 down just a minute in thanks to Moussa Marega’s goal.
Federico Chiesa, who is on loan at Juventus from Fiorentina, halved the deficit with eight minutes to go, but Porto held on for a crucial win.
Pirlo is under huge pressure to deliver a 10th successive Serie A title to Juventus, however, his side are eight points behind leaders Inter Milan.
And a premature exit from the Champions League will only raise more question marks over the Italian’s future in Turin.
