Sunderland will have to wait another year to get out of League One as they were beaten by Lincoln in the play-off semi-finals.
The Black Cats won 2-1 at the Stadium of Light but that wasn’t enough as they lost the first leg 2-0, meaning the Imps won the tie 3-2 on aggregate.
Lincoln will meet Blackpool, who got the better of Oxford United, in the play-off final on May 30.
Lee Johnson’s side levelled the enthralling tie in the first-half thanks to goals from Ross Stewart and Charlie Wyke.
But the visitors improved after the break and after Regan Poole’s header hit the bar, Ton Hopper headed home what proved to be the decisive goal.
The tie could have been buried when Michael Appleton’s side were given a penalty but Jorge Grant failed to convert.
