When you need to go, you need to go…

Eric Dier mysteriously disappeared from the pitch during Tottenham’s Carabao Cup fourth round penalty shootout win over Chelsea on Tuesday.

The defender has confirmed he needed the toilet, but his absence almost cost his team a goal in the second-half.

Already 1-0 down thanks to Timo Werner’s first goal in a Chelsea shirt, Callum Hudson-Odoi wasted a golden opportunity to double his side’s lead when he blazed over the bar.

It led to Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho rushing to the changing room to fetch Dier.

Shortly afterwards, Dier walked out of the changing room and back on to the pitch as Erik Lamela’s 81st-minute goal took the game to penalties.

After nine perfect penalties, Mason Mount missed his spot-kick as Tottenham progressed to the next round of the competition.

Explaining the toilet incident, Dier told Sky Sports: “He [Mourinho] wasn’t happy, but there wasn’t anything I could do about it.

“Nature was calling! I heard there was a chance, but thankfully they didn’t take it.”

Mourinho reserved ‘special’ praise for Dier.

He said: “He had to go. There was no other chance. He had to go. Maybe it’s a normal thing when you are dehydrated.

“I knew he had to go but I just wanted to put some pressure on him.

“What happened to Eric Dier is not normal. I have to praise him in a special way.

“So many rules should be forbidden for a player to play in 48 hours of this intensity. What Eric Dier did is not human to do.”

Gary Lineker, who famously soiled himself during England’s 1990 World Cup match against Ireland, could not help but comment.

He tweeted: “Strange scenes as @ericdier runs off the pitch to the dressing room, followed hastily by Mourinho.

“Then Dier runs back out to resume playing. Presumably he needed the loo. Players just don’t shit on the pitch anymore. What’s wrong with them?”
