Bayern Munich have won the race to sign in-demand RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, the club’s sporting director has confirmed.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have been linked with big-money moves for the 22-year-old in recent months.
However, Bayern have agreed to pay Upamecano’s £37.2million (€42.5m) release clause this summer.
Bayern chief Hasan Salihamidzic told German outlet Bild: “I can confirm that and we are very happy about that at FC Bayern.
“We had very good, intensive and professional discussions with Dayot and his agent Volker Struth for several months.”
It is understood Upamecano has agreed a five-year contract with Bayern Munich, who have won eight successive Bundesliga titles.
Liverpool had been tipped to make a move for the France international in the January transfer window following injuries to Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip.
However, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp ended up bringing in Preston’s Ben Davies for £2m and Schalke’s Ozan Kabak on loan.
Elsewhere, Chelsea are reportedly in the market for a central defender with Thiago Silva turning 37 in September.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are believed to be looking for a left-sided defender to partner Harry Maguire and have even been linked with Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings.
