Darren Bent says he knew Jose Mourinho and Gareth Bale would not get along at Tottenham.
There was excitement among Spurs fans when the Welshman rejoined the club on loan from Real Madrid last summer.
However, Bale has failed to nail down a regular starting spot under Tottenham boss Mourinho and was left out of the squad for Wednesday’s 5-4 FA Cup defeat to Everton.
In his press conference on Friday, Mourinho claimed Bale’s Instagram story about having ‘a good session’ ahead of the trip to Everton was a ‘contradiction’ and ‘totally wrong’ as the player had asked for a scan following some discomfort.
With Mourinho appearing to accuse the 31-year-old of lying, former Tottenham striker Darren Bent has revealed he thought the pair would fall out.
He told Friday’s Drivetime on talkSPORT: “I wondered how long it would be before those two butted heads.
“At the start of the season, I looked at the situation and you know what Mourinho’s like, if you’re not up to a certain standard he [Mourinho] doesn’t really care what reputation you’ve got, if you’re not up to scratch, you’re not going to play.
“Now, we’re starting to see them butt heads. Bale came off a couple of games ago, they didn’t even look at each other.
“What’s he bringing? In this situation I can’t really blame Mourinho.
“It’s not like when Bale’s played he’s given the manager a problem by going, ‘I can’t really leave him out.’”
Bent insists Bale has done ‘next to nothing’ to impress Mourinho in his 15 appearances for Tottenham this season.
He said: “Bale’s played a lot of games in Europe, he’s played a lot in cup competitions, he’s featured in the Premier League, but he hasn’t really shown anything.
“There have been times when I’ve looked at him and gone, ‘right, maybe this is Bale’s time’… still, next to nothing.
“Honestly, I did wonder how long it would be until they started butting heads.”
